Tesla and Berlin platform JUNI launched the Cell Giga Challenge at Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg: startups with solutions in materials, equipment, operations, automation, and AI can test tech on live 4680 cell production (JUNI, Electrek).
18 GWh target
Tesla targets 18 GWh of annual cells in Grünheide—one of Europe’s largest hubs—with investment JUNI puts at $350M over six months (Tesla confirmed an additional $250M in May to double capacity from 8 GWh) (electrive.com).
Five phases and prize
Online application → screening → technical interview → pitch day → paid pilot negotiation with the cell team. Deadline: July 24, 2026; program starts August. André Thierig, Giga Berlin plant manager, announced the challenge on X.
Why it matters
Tesla wants to accelerate speed, quality, cost, and safety on a line that will feed European Model Y production and broader energy strategy. Cell production is expected in the first half of 2027 per EVwire.
