On July 14, 2026, Starlink (@Starlink) unveiled the residential V5 kit on X: “The next generation Starlink Kit is designed to deliver reliable, high-speed home internet.” The dish promises a smaller form factor, lightweight design, and greater power efficiency than the V4 terminal, with speeds up to 375+ Mbps for streaming, video calls, and gaming. The post links to starlink.com/v5 and notes hardware is available in “select areas,” expanding as production ramps.

What Starlink announced

The official post—with a promotional video—frames fixed, high-speed home internet in a more manageable package than the prior generation. Michael Nicolls, Starlink’s SVP of Engineering at SpaceX, congratulated the team hours later with product context:

“Designed with high performance, reliability, and scalability in mind based on the learnings of our previous products. Also, designed and manufactured in the USA.”

PCMag reads V5 as a scale play rather than a full V4 replacement: less material, lighter shipping weight, and fewer watts on the roof. ISPreview UK stresses V5 is not intended for in-motion use; Starlink keeps the revised Mini and mobile/maritime lines for that job.

NATA estimates V5 is nearly half the area of V4 and 62% lighter on the dish alone. Notebookcheck adds mounted wind tolerance up to 165 mph versus 60 mph on V4 consumer sheets—a meaningful gain for exposed installs. The trade-off: official peak download drops from 400+ to 375+ Mbps; outlets like The Verge note real throughput depends on plan, time of day, and local congestion more than headline Mbps.

Standard 4 X (V4x): a bundle, not a new dish generation

Online confusion often treats “V4x” or “Standard 4 X” as a separate antenna. Per SpaceTek UK and PCMag, Standard 4 X is the commercial bundle pairing the same V4 dish with Router 3 (tri-band 4×4 Wi‑Fi, wider coverage). The V5 kit typically ships with Router Mini (dual-band 2×2, shorter range) and, in some markets, a pipe adapter in the box.

  • Standard 4 X / V4: higher peak speed (400+ Mbps), in-motion use on eligible plans, stronger router—positioned as the “premium” residential option.
  • V5: miniaturized dish, lower power, easier install—aimed at entry or mid-tier plans (e.g. 100 Mbps / 200 Mbps in several countries).
  • Mini / Mini X: portability and travel; V5 approaches Mini size but Starlink insists it is not for vehicles in motion.

ISPreview notes UK Max-tier customers may still receive V4, while V5 appears in mid-tier rollouts. In the U.S., PCMag and Engadget documented offers in areas such as Drummond, Montana, with the 100 Mbps Residential plan at $55/month and hardware rental at $10/month—a different model from the purchasable V4 kit (~$349 on Amazon per Notebookcheck).

Availability and what it means for customers

Starlink limits V5 to “select areas” with a waitlist at starlink.com/v5. Expansion hinges on supply chain: Nicolls highlights scalability and U.S. manufacturing, aligned with tens of millions of active terminals.

If you already run V4 or Standard 4 X, there is no forced upgrade: V4 remains the peak-speed, mobility-capable reference. V5 makes sense if you want a subtler roof footprint, lower electricity use (meaningful with solar or batteries, per ISPreview), or a lighter install—installers quoted by PCMag describe mounting as noticeably easier.

In the broader Musk ecosystem, the same V5 hardware later appeared factory-integrated in Tesla’s Cybercab, but the July 14 announcement is the standalone residential product. Starlink has not said when V5 will replace V4 in every market or whether trade-in programs will appear.
