Millions of owners with Hardware 3 (HW3) have gone over a year without a major Full Self-Driving update —the last one was FSD v12.6.4 in March 2025—. In June 2026, Tesla confirms that FSD v14 Lite will arrive by the end of the month, a compressed version of the AI4 neural network adapted to the computing limits of HW3.
What "Lite" means
The nickname doesn't imply a cut-down experience for the driver. Ashok Elluswamy, VP of AI Software, explained at the Q1 2026 earnings call that "Lite" refers to the neural network size, not the available features. The goal is to achieve functional parity with FSD v14 on HW4/AI4 vehicles.
HW3 owners will be able to start FSD from Park and basically have all the features that v14 has on HW4. — Ashok Elluswamy
Expected features
- Start FSD from Park: initiate assisted driving without touching the steering wheel when leaving a parking spot.
- Destination Parking: the car searches for a spot upon arriving at the route's final destination.
- Automatic Reverse and Gear Shifting between Drive and Reverse.
- Driving Profiles (including modes like Mad Max and Sloth).
- Reaction to Emergency Vehicles and improvements in driving dynamics.
The smaller model might slightly affect reaction times or smoothness compared to HW4; this will need to be evaluated in practice after deployment.
What HW3 will not have
During the same earnings call, Elon Musk was explicit: HW3 cannot achieve unsupervised FSD due to hardware limitations. Owners who want full autonomy will need the compute and camera retrofit that Tesla has announced, with a discount on a new vehicle for those who already paid for FSD.
Timeline and international expansion
The rollout in North America is planned for late June 2026. Tesla has confirmed that v14 Lite will also arrive in international markets where FSD on HW4 is already approved, but without specific dates: the process depends on technical verification, regional adaptation, and country-by-country regulatory approvals.
For owners outside the US and Canada, this update is particularly relevant: in many approved regions, FSD only works on HW4 today.
